February is here and this is still a great month to get some prep work & gardening done! As you work outside, much of your to-do list for February will match January. During February, you can plant the following vegetables: asparagus, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, English peas, lettuce, onions, radishes, spinach, sweet peas, and Swiss chard. Daddy Pete’s Potting Mix and Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix are the best mixes for planting these vegetables in your containers, raised beds, or gardens.
You can also continue working on the January to-do list.
Freshen your raised beds with Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix or Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil; and you can amend your existing soils with Daddy Pete’s Composted Cow Manure or Daddy Pete’s Mushroom Compost.
Plant your bare root trees and shrubs with 50% of Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix mixed with 50% of the dirt removed from the hole. Also, mulch the new plantings with Daddy Pete’s Hardwood Mulch or Daddy Pete’s Pine Bark Mulch.
Add Daddy Pete’ Kickin’ Chickin to your compost bin to keep all of the beneficial microbes working during these colder months.
Buy your seeds this month for early spring planting as there could be shortages. Try buying heirloom seeds and don’t forget to save some seeds from your 2026 harvest for 2027.
Prune only trees and shrubs that have not set buds for early spring bloom such as Crepe Myrtles.
Clean and service your garden tools, and as needed, replace with new ones from your local garden center or hardware store.
