2026 has arrived and we have a list of gardening tips for you to start working on during the month of January! Here is our January to-do list.

  1. Start seeds indoors on broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, and turnip greens so they will be ready for early February transplants. Daddy Pete’s Sea n’ Farm is the best mix for starting these seeds.

  2. Freshen your raised beds with Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix or Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil; and you can amend your existing soils with Daddy Pete’s Composted Cow Manure or Daddy Pete’s Mushroom Compost.

  3. Plant your bare root trees and shrubs with 50% of Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix mixed with 50% of the dirt removed from the hole. Also, mulch those new plantings with Daddy Pete’s Hardwood Mulch or Daddy Pete’s Pine Bark Mulch.

  4. Add Daddy Pete’s Kickin’ Chickin to your compost bin to keep all of the beneficial microbes working during these colder, winter months.

  5. Buy your seeds this month for early spring planting. Try buying heirloom seeds and then practice saving some seeds from your 2026 harvest for 2027.

  6. Prune only trees and shrubs that have not set buds for early spring bloom such as Crepe Myrtles.

  7. Clean and service your garden tools, and as needed, replace with new ones from your local garden center or hardware store.

  8. Don’t forget your furry friends during the winter months! Daddy Pete’s Sawdust is an excellent, dry bedding for dogs, horses, goats, and other livestock animals.
