December is in full force, and Christmas is just around the corner! For our December blog, Daddy Pete’s would like to help with your Christmas meals by sharing some recipes that will allow you to use some of the items you planted and harvested during the year. And don’t forget our sweet treat recipes for Christmas Eve!
Christmas Eve Day is a great time to bake some treats for your family or for Santa, so we have included a recipe for Rudolph Peanut Butter Cookies and for Peppermint Swirl Fudge. For watching football games and Christmas parades, we have some recipes that make great snacks: Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers; a Christmas Tree Veggie Platter Appetizer Recipe; a Cranberry Meatballs Appetizers Recipe; and a Crispy Potato Skins Appetizer Recipe. And if it snows where you live, we have a recipe for Snow Ice Cream to enjoy as you cozy up by the fire!
For Christmas breakfast, we have the following choices: Easy Breakfast Casserole with Vegetables and Fall and Winter Baked Fruit. Then for a mid-day appetizer, we have a Christmas Snowman Cheese Board: A Festive Holiday Appetizer; for a salad we have an Apple Arugula Salad with Maple Pecans; and for a soup we have a Winter Minestrone Soup. For your main Christmas Day meal, Beef Tenderloin Roast (Herbed Garlic Butter); Baked Cranberry Chicken with Rosemary; Balsamic Glazed Brussels Sprouts; Best-Ever Green Bean Casserole; Maple Mustard Roasted Carrots; Creamy Scalloped Potatoes; and for your bread, a Cheesy Christmas Treat Bread and/or a Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Easy Dinner Rolls Recipe. For dessert we have recipes for a Christmas Eve Cinnamon-Vanilla Custard Pie-Creamy Holiday Dessert Magic and a Gingerbread Cake. We hope these recipes help add a little joy to your time with family and friends!
Don’t forget your outdoor gardening projects for December. It is still a great month to plant fruit bushes and fruit trees (such as apples, blackberries, blueberries, figs, nectarines, peaches, pears, persimmons, plums, & strawberries); and to plant or prune deciduous trees and shrubs and border evergreen trees and shrubs. The only exceptions for pruning are trees or shrubs that have already set their buds for spring—like azaleas or camellias. And remember when pruning, never take more than 30% of the tree or shrub. For planting, Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix is an excellent growing medium for all of these items.
December is also a good time to freshen the soil in your existing raised beds or to install new raised beds. If you need to amend your existing soil for planting, we recommend using Daddy Pete’s Composted Cow Manure, Daddy Pete’s Kickin’ Chickin, Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil, Daddy Pete’s Mushroom Compost, or Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix. If you are installing a new raised bed, Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix is a great mix to use. Remember to put leaves in your compost bin, and to mulch existing plants for the cold weather ahead. And if you are out of ideas for Christmas presents, consider buying gardening supplies for your friends who garden or would like to garden next year!
Whether it’s questions about our products or general gardening questions, don’t forget to visit our website at www.daddypetes.com to submit your questions for our Daddy Pete Podcast with Melvin York. For the month of December, we have several podcasts at the link below.
