Below you will find some tips for your gardening and landscaping projects, and some different recipes to help you bring your harvest from your garden…to your kitchen…to your dinner table!

September is now here and it is still a great month to plant these items from our August list: beets, cabbage, carrots, collard greens, lettuce (all types), mustard greens, onions, radishes, spinach, and turnip greens. In addition to these items, you can also plant brussels sprouts, garlic, and green onions in your gardens and raised beds for fall harvest. And don’t forget, September is a good month to set out these fruit bushes and vines: blackberry vines, blueberry bushes, grape vines, muscadine vines, raspberry vines, and strawberry plants. Daddy Pete’s Potting Mix and Daddy Pete’s Raised Bed Mix work well for planting any or all of these items. If you are amending your existing clay soil, Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil and Daddy Pete’s Planting Mix work great for this type of soil. For amending sandy soils, we recommend using our Daddy Pete’s Cow Manure, Daddy Pete’s Mushroom Compost, or Daddy Pete’s Sandy Loam Top Soil. We also suggest mulching around your fruit bushes and plants using one of Daddy Pete’s mulches: Daddy Pete’s Hardwood Mulch, Daddy Pete’s Pine Bark Mulch, Daddy Pete’s Pine Bark Mini-nuggets, or Daddy Pete’s Soil Enhancer.

While you’re working in your yard this Fall, don’t forget that September is a good month for transplanting perennials; planting Spring blooming flower bulbs in the ground or in a raised bed for next year; prepping and sowing lawns; patching lawns; and for taking soil samples to confirm the best method of fertilization for your lawn. You can also over-seed with annual rye grass for a green cover for the winter months. Daddy Pete’s Sandy Loam Top Soil is a great product for sowing and patching lawns, as well as Daddy Pete’s Cow Manure or Daddy Pete’s Lawn & Garden Soil.
